The method
How a 13-week forecast works.
A 13-week forecast covers one quarter, week by week. It's short enough to be accurate and long enough to see a squeeze coming: the week payroll, rent and a tax payment land together while customers are still paying last month's invoices.
- Start with the cash you have today.
- Place every receipt and payment in the week it actually moves cash, not the week it was invoiced.
- For each week, closing cash is opening cash plus receipts minus payments. That closing figure is next week's opening cash.
- Compare each week's closing cash with your minimum. The first week under it is when you need a plan: chase a customer, move a supplier run or arrange funding.
Update it every week. Roll forward by one week, replace the forecast for the week just gone with what really happened, and see whether the low point has moved.
Illustrative only. This is a simplified model for planning and learning. It isn't financial, accounting or tax advice, and the example figures are made up. Check anything you rely on with your accountant.
